Hello people. We just woke up. And we’re going to rock – but first we’re learning about the swear words that you can’t mutter on air. Fair enough! 2 nights ago we played in New York City with a band called Supergrass, who we all loved when we were at school. Weird. They were awesome.

    Pick of the Day: 8.1.08

Every weekday at 1:30 PM listen up for the Philly Local Pick of the Day, an especially rockin' sample track from the plethora of hot new tunes Philadelphia has to offer.

    "Never Home"
    Rhymes with Music
    Pat Cusick

Hailing from Central Pennsylvania, Pat Cusick has been shaking up the local music scene with his pensive lyrics and intriguing voice. As described by intelligentpop.com Pat Cusick's debut solo album, Rhymes with Music, is "An energetic collection of 7 well-written songs ...
Cusick is a fine rock singer, and his delivery has not a whiff of dishonesty to it." Originally recording demos for fun, Cusick could have never predicted that upon the release of his album his success would skyrocket. Recently, his song "Drive, Drive, Drive" was featured on the ABC's hit show "Men in Trees." So be sure to check out Cusick's myspace and website for music, show dates, and more.

Also, we are quite positive that Pat Cusick isn't the only great musician from the Central Pennsylvania region and that's why Fly Magazine and WXPN have teamed up to invite Central Pennsylvania based singer-songwriters and bands to submit some music to WXPN's Philly Local show and not only will you be considered for air-play on WXPN, but you may even get a gig at our local music event in October! If you choose to submit your music we are requesting that you send 3 CD copies of your music along with a artist biography to the address below:

    WXPN
    Attn: Philly Local/Helen Leicht
    3025 Walnut St.
    Philadelphia, PA 19104

In addition, please indicate on the envelope that you are submitting from Central Pennsylvania, and hopefully you'll get some air-play and a possible gig!

    Wagonwheel Blues
    The War on Drugs

Coming to the Philly Local scene by way of South Jersey, this band recently blew audiences away at our annual XPoNential Music Festival presented by Subaru. With a vocalist often compared to Bob Dylan an a band that has been said to employ an sound resembling that of Animal Collective, it is no wonder this group is experiencing great success. The War on Drugs recently debuted their highly anticipated album, Wagonwheel Blues, and are currently on tour making stops in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, France, Ireland, and South Wales, but luckily we have them right here for you! Below is a clip of their performance at this year's XPoNential Music Festival. If you're interested in more media from our most recent festival...click here.

    Remembering Edie Huggins 7-30-08

I was lucky enough to know Edie Huggins. I met her through my friend Flash Rosenberg and although I never knew her as well as Flash, we saw each other over the years at great dinners and fun parties. It was always a treat to see Edie, who had the most positive affect and radiated an inner beauty that matched her gorgeous looks. She loved to laugh and was the caring friend that you’d expect her to be from her on air persona. Once she profiled me as one of Edie’s People, her long running series on Channel 10. She came to my house with her small crew and was so enthusiastic about my decorating that she took the edge off my self consciousness right away. Edie had a way with people and an unflagging interest in their stories over her stellar career of terrific broadcast journalism. Like Anne d”Harnoncourt, the Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art whom we lost last month, Edie was a pioneer in her field. She was the only woman and the only African American on the news team that recruited her to Philadelphia 42 years ago, and there was every indication she would have continued to do what she loved best if cancer hadn’t taken her life. But nothing can extinguish her spark and sparkle in our memories. Edie has been a big part of the experience of being a Philadelphian for decades, and she will live on in our hearts. Her memorial service next week will be a chance for us to gather and feel her spirit within us.

    Covered by: Matthew Dear
Album: Life Beyond Mars, Bowie Uncovered

For today's UnderCover selection you heard Matthew Dear's cover of David Bowie's 1977 released song "Sound and Vision." Sometimes described as one of Bowie's less successful songs in comparison to some of his more popular tracks, with little publicity the song still managed to rank well on charts. It is clearly underrated given that today the song has caught the attention of major rock groups like Franz Ferdinand, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and of course today's featured artist, electronic avant-pop musician Matthew Dear. Click the video below to view a clip of Bowie performing "Sound and Vision" live.

    Flea Market Vinyl - Poco

For years I had thought of the band Poco only as this kinda lite '70s country pop thing. I knew Ritchie Furay (ex-Buffalo Springfield) had been a member of it for some time, and that some future Eagles as well, but I didn't really know their history. Then at a flea market, I found their 2nd album Poco for sale for a buck. Noticing that not only were Furay and Timothy B. Schmidt but also Jim Messina in the group at that time, and that there was a song that appeared to be at least 15 minutes long on it, I figured - "this can't be bad, can it?" and was rewarded with a great album. Contemporaries of Gram Parsons' Flying Burrito Brothers and pre-dating the country-rock hybrid success of the Eagles by a few years, 1970's Poco is alt-country-prog-jamband rock - more than 30 years before Wilco stumbled onto that ultra-hyphenated genre. The band's second album, it's an accomplished work - and it must have driven Furay a little nuts to never quite make it while his former Springfield bandmates Neil Young and Steven Stills cruised to mega-platinum and Timothy B. and Jim Messina both found major success after leaving Poco to join the Eagles and Loggins & Messina. Furay eventually left Poco too, becoming a minister. The band continued on towards that Yacht-rock styled semi-success with "Crazy Love," and picked up over 15 band members over the years - Furay still gigs with Poco when they play near his homestate of Colorado.

Side one is chock full of great little country rock tunes, augmented by Rusty Young's fine multi-instrumental chops. But it's the epic jam that comprises all of side two of the album that really tripped me out. With Dan Reed's Highs in the '70s ready to dig deep into the P's and Q's of that glorious decade this Saturday afternoon, I give to you a treat - the full version of "Nobody's Fool/El Tonto de Nadie, Regresa," by Poco.

And to whet your whistle, here's a few odd videos - we start with Poco on a boat - sounding exactly like the bridge between the Burritos and Eagles on another track from the Poco album.

    And again from '72...

Flea Market Vinyl - Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra`

Sometimes you gotta dig a little deep for the gems. Case in point - a couple of Sinatra albums I grabbed recently - one by Frank and one by daughter Nancy. The Frank album My Way isn't his best work, but it does contain a great swinging version of "Mrs. Robinson" - and even though its the end of the '60s, Frank is still caustic, sexist, mean spirited - but swinging...

Meanwhile, the Nancy Sinatra album I found was Nancy in London - not nearly as good as her Boots album, but again, within the grooves you can find a few gems - in this case it's her version of "On Broadway." Here's some clips from the Chairman and his daughter...

One of the best parts of music is hearing your favorite artist or band cover a classic. That is why for today's UnderCover set, we are bringing you artists who have perfected the art of covering a song.
    ________________

We continue to bring you the talent of the legendary Glen Campbell this week, from his forthcoming album, Meet Glen Campbell, due out August 17th. With 50 years in show business and over 70 albums under his belt, it is a treat that Campbell has released an album consisting solely of cover songs.
Today we highlighted his versions of "These Days" by Jackson Browne and "Sadly Beautiful" by The Replacements.

Written by Jackson when he was merely 16 years old, "These Days" is an incredible introspective ballad that has been covered by musical legends such as Tom Rush, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Iain Matthews.

With emotionally heartfelt lyrics as this:
"Baby needs a brand new pair of eyes
cause the ones you got now see only goodbyes
had no chance at all to let you know
    oh so sadly, beautiful
    sadly, beautiful,"
it is no wonder that Glen Campbell chose to cover "Sadly Beautiful." Here is Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg in 2002 with an acoustic version.
